Solar Myths & Facts & FAQs
Myth 1: Solar Panels Are Damaging To Roofs
Fact:
Before any installation begins, our licensed and experienced solar installers start with a roof assessment to determine if it is suitable for solar panels. We typically recommend roof-mounted solar panels on newer roofs with at least ten years of life left. When properly installed, solar panels provide additional roof protection without damaging the exterior or infrastructure.
Myth 2: Solar Panels Raise Property Taxes
Fact:
While solar panel installations are known to increase the value of a home, due to the California solar energy system tax exclusion, homeowners who install new solar panels will not see an increase in their property taxes. This tax exclusion was set to expire in 2016 but is extended until January 1st, 2025.
Myth 3: Solar Panels Don’t Work On Cloudy Days
Fact:
The amount of energy a solar panel system produces depends on several factors, including efficiency, orientation, and of course, the weather. Places such as rainy Portland and cloudy San Francisco still rank as some of the top US cities for solar energy, though solar energy production is slightly lower than sunnier areas. Solar energy is a reliable and cost-effective energy source even in cold, cloudy regions. Talk to a local solar company to learn more.
Myth 4: The Payback Period For Solar Installation Is Too Long
Fact:
On average, most US households take about eight years for solar to start paying for themselves. Considering solar panels can last 20-30 years, the payback period is worth it. To calculate how many months it will take your savings on electricity bills to pay off your solar plan, subtract incentives such as the Federal Tax Credit from the total installation cost and divide that by your average monthly energy bills.
Myth 5: Solar Panel Manufacturing Creates More Pollution Than It Saves.
Fact:
During the lifecycle of a solar panel energy system, the majority of greenhouse gases and pollutants produced happen during the manufacturing process. Fortunately, the overall emissions are minimal and largely recycled. Since solar panels generate clean energy for 20 to 30 years or more, the environmental benefits far outweigh the initial carbon footprint.
Myth 6: Warranties For Solar Panels Cannot Be Transferred
Fact:
When buying or selling a home with solar panels, it is important to know how the solar panels are financed and who the manufacturers and installers are. In most cases, solar panels are transferable from one homeowner to another. Be sure to discuss warranty transfers, warranty details such as what actions would void a warranty, and the performance and equipment guarantees with your solar installers and future homebuyers.
